So I Just Watched… Man Of Steel (Warner Brothers/ DC Comics, 2013)
Expectation was big for this one, I’m not gonna lie. And I’m glad it paid off this good. Zack Snyder is back with a superhero film after the lackluster “Sucker Punch” and while his personal signature is all over the movie, “Man Of Steel” manages to be not only a good film (that would be me giving short merit where there is much to be said)… this film is awesome and awe-inspiring in every sense of the word. A clear origin story from the begging every cast choice is brilliant to carry out this beautiful film. Russel Crowe totally pulls an emphatic Jor-El while giving Clark all the answers he needs to find his sense of purpose. Diane Lane and Kevin Costner actually managed to make me shed a tear. Superman’s parent on Krypton and Earth are the moral compass of the character. Jor-El gave Kal the gift of  humanity (to live among them), Jonathan and Martha helped him embrace it. In front of us we have a very human Superman.
On the villains side, Michael Shannon as General Zod was truly great, he already gave an intense performance on “Boardwalk Empire” so if you’ve seen this series you know what to expect from this guy, he delivers every line and every gesture as an antagonist the way he’s supposed to do it. As the film goes you truly sense that this man believes in his actions as the only way to save what is left of his civilization. Amy Adams is a great Lois Lane, a woman who is very proactive when it comes to her job, most fans of the character will be very happy with the empowerment she gets in the film, there’s no lady in distress here, there’s a woman who actually manages to help the Man Of Steel defend his adopted world. And last but not least we have Henry Cavill. If there’s one person who has come close to stepping in the toes of Christopher Reeve as Superman is this man. His Superman is truly sympathetic. We find him in a position very common for most people of this generation: he wants to find his way, his sense of purpose and where he belongs.
Story wise David Goyer has a another home run out of the park with this script and the visual effects are more than you could hope for. The mayhem and destruction in the film rivals what you’ve seen in “The Avengers”. This Superman (and his enemies) knows how to pack a punch and the super violence manages to be very entertaining to watch. I specially recommend the last trow-down. The music by Hans Zimmer is in perfect place with every scene in the film, the cameos by sings of Wayne-Corp and Lex-Corp are meant for eagle eyed geeks like me. All in all, this film truly delivered and I hope this is the beginning of a good streak for the DC Comics characters. It’s an instant comic book film classic for me and I hope you guys out there get a kick out of it!
